Buy Agm Battery

Absorbent glass mat batteries (AGM) have been a market favorite for the past few decades. At the time, they were designed to be a viable alternative to the Ni-Cad batteries, which were very costly. Though they were mainly used in military vehicles as a source of back up power and heavy vehicles such as long-distance trucks, nowadays, they have more diversified uses. In principle, the AGM batteries work like any other lead battery. However, the AGM batteries, compared to flooded batteries, have several significant improvements that make them more efficient. Additionally, just like other types of batteries in the market, they have their advantages and disadvantages.

Unlike the traditional lead-acid batteries that freely flood their electrodes, AGM batteries have glass mats that prevent this. Additionally, it is the function of these glass mats to avoid spillage. Rather than absorbing the electrolyte, the glass mats work by holding the electrolyte in place, preventing it from spilling over, even when the battery is placed in odd positions.

Because of the way that they are designed, the AGM batteries have minimal internal resistance. This, therefore, enables them to provide sufficient bursts of power when necessary, such as when one needs to start a battery. Due to this feature, these batteries respond better to loading than any other battery on the market.

Sulfation is the property of lead-acid batteries, where there is a gradual accumulation of lead sulfate crystals in the cells. In most cases, it is the cause of failure in lead-acid batteries. Sulfation mostly occurs when the battery is not fully charged, and thus the crystals continuously build up on the plates. When this process goes out of hand, it prevents the efficient conversion of chemical to electrical energy. Therefore, for other types of lead-acid batteries, it is essential to charge them every six months to prevent sulfation. However, in AGM batteries, sulfation is significantly reduced. Therefore, they can be stored for extended periods without needing a recharge.

Unlike the flooded batteries, AGM batteries have a higher production and manufacturing cost. However, they are still cheaper to produce than gel type batteries. Even though the cost of manufacturing these batteries has reduced since their introduction into the market in the 80s, it is still generally higher when compared to other battery types in the market. This, therefore, make them slightly expensive for use in some devices.

A: Hi Sandy, thank you for contacting Renogy. In general, a 55lb thrust motor draws 52 amps at full speed or at 624 watts per hour. Our 100Ah AGM battery recommended discharge is at 50% so that equates to 600Wh of useable energy. Still, we recommend that you reach out to your respective Trolling motor manufacturer to get more information about its consumption.

A: Hi Sonny, Thank you for reaching out to Renogy. Each 100Ah AGM battery has a maximum charging current limit of 30A. Connecting 2 batteries in parallel will increase the limit to 60A. This means that you can use a battery charger/charge controller that can charge the battery up to 60A such as 60A DCDC battery charger, Rover 60, etc...

We also offer the exclusive UltraBattery and Synergy technologies for partial state-of-charge transportation applications. UltraBattery technology combines the advantages of an Advanced VRLA battery with the advantages of an asymmetric supercapacitor, while our Synergy battery technology offers one of the most cost-effective solutions that is ideal for Micro or Mild HEVs.

AGM batteries primarily utilize their high performance in combination with start-stop technology. However, the strengths of an AGM battery can also be used even if there is no start-stop system on board: This technology provides larger power reserves, from which conventional vehicles can also benefit, e.g. due to a longer service life of the battery.

Encapsulated AGM batteries are maintenance free and leak-proof, as the electrolyte of an AGM battery is bound in an absorbent separator made of glass fibers. No battery acid can escape, even if the battery is damaged. This prevents subsequent damage to the bodywork (e.g. rust) or other adjacent components.

As well as the advantages which have already been mentioned, there are other reasons to upgrade to an AGM battery. The following circumstances make replacement with an AGM battery advisable:

Urban trucks are also often provided with electrically powered components and special equipment. A conventional starter battery quickly reaches its limits and deteriorates due to decomposition of the active material which is relevant for its capacity. Due to the special design of the cells and a special mixture for the active material, an AGM battery can withstand more and deeper charging cycles than a conventional battery.

Vehicles with simple start-stop systems without recovery of braking energy (recuperation) are usually equipped with an EFB battery. However, even in this case, replacement with an AGM battery is worthwhile: The start-stop technology operates reliably and without malfunctions. Last but not least, AGM batteries impress with their high load capacity: Over its entire service life, an AGM battery has a better charge acceptance than an EFB battery.

Start-stop technology equipped with an EFB battery only switches off the engine in 39%* of all cases in comparison with an AGM battery. The combination of an AGM battery and a start-stop system is economical, powerful and dependable.

AGM technology became popular in the early 1980s as a sealed lead acid battery for military aircraft, vehicles and UPS to reduce weight and improve reliability. The sulfuric acid is absorbed by a very fine fiberglass mat, making the battery spill-proof. This enables shipment without hazardous material restrictions. The plates can be made flat to resemble a standard flooded lead acid pack in a rectangular case; they can also be wound into a cylindrical cell.

AGM has very low internal resistance, is capable to deliver high currents on demand and offers a relatively long service life, even when deep cycled. AGM is maintenance free, provides good electrical reliability and is lighter than the flooded lead acid type. While regular lead acid batteries need a topping charge every six months to prevent the buildup of sulfation, AGM batteries are less prone to sulfation and can sit in storage for longer before a charge becomes necessary. The battery stands up well to low temperatures and has a low self-discharge.

The leading advantages of AGM are a charge that is up to five times faster than the flooded version, and the ability to deep cycle. AGM offers a depth-of-discharge of 80 percent; the flooded, on the other hand, is specified at 50 percent DoD to attain the same cycle life. The negatives are slightly lower specific energy and higher manufacturing costs than the flooded, but cheaper than the gel battery. Table 1 compares AGM batteries to gel batteries on key performance characteristics.

AGM is the preferred battery for upscale motorcycles. Being sealed, AGM reduces acid spilling in an accident, lowers the weight for the same performance and allows installation at odd angles. Because of good performance at cold temperatures, AGM batteries are also used for marine, motor home and robotic applications.

Some articles emphatically state that an AGM battery should not be charged at greater than 14.4V. Other articles state that to achieve full charge, an AGM battery needs to be charged to 14.6 - 14.8V. Which is correct?

If your observations span more than 5-10 years, consider the main reason battery maintainers are now useful. Many cars require a continuous current of hundreds of milliamps to maintain the vehicles electronic systems. If the car is driven, say once a week or so, no problem. But if the car sits unused for more than a month,, the battery may be considerably or completely discharged. In any event, AGM batteries are lead-acid, just in a different physical format.

the cheap Chinese brands are terrible. Make sure you have a quality battery.next check if you have bleed down current. Like a security system drawing current all the time. My Harley has this problem and the "fix" , plug in a battery maintainer that floats the battery when i'm not riding it. cheers.

AGM batteries are what I consider junk. Have had several and never got over a year service out of them. GM says I do not use the vehicles enough and I need to keep a battery maintenance charger hooked to them. That is opposite of what is promoted to be their advantage over lead acid. I have units with lead acid batteries and have minimal minimal trouble out of them. I think AGM is operated and for me maximum trouble.
